Some personal advices on doing Ph.D. in birational geometry and related subjects
In many senses I agree with Yongqi Liang's opinions, you can read his webpage. The followings are some personal advices based on my own experience.
- Things one should learn in undergraduate and the first 1-2 years in graduate school:
- Some basic commutative algebra (e.g. Introduction to Commutative Algebra by Atiyah-Macdonald)
- Some basic algebraic geometry (e.g. Chapter I-III of Algebraic Geometry by Hartshorne, Basic Algebraic Geometry I” (Shafarevich))
- Some basic curve and surface theory (e.g. Chapter IV-V of Algebraic Geometry by Hartshorne, or Complex Algebraic Surfaces by Beauville)
- Some basic birational geometry (e.g. Positivity in Algebraic Geometry I&II by Lazarsfeld, Chapter II&III&V of Birational geometry of algebraic varieties by Kollár-Mori)
- Some advanced birational geometry (e.g. BCHM)
- Things one should do in graduate school and later:
- Find problem(s) you are interested
- Solve the problem(s) you find
- Get a Ph.D.
- Try hard to survive
